A recently released book takes readers on a deep dive into the history of San Mateo County athletics.
Cradle of Champions: A Selected History of San Mateo County Sports was released earlier this month b
y John Horgan.
Horgan is a career journalist, who has spent more than 60 years covering sports and athletics in San Mateo county.
His new book focuses on significant events, important figures and achievements in the history of the region’s athletics.
Within its 161 pages, Horgan captures 75 local stories and shares 130 photos. Many of the stories focus on homegrown sports stars, including:
- Tom Brady
- Tom Martinez
- Wendy Brown
- Bill Walsh
- Mimi Arnold
- John Naber
- Pat Winslow Connolly
- Dick Vermeil
- Barry Bonds
- Ann Kiyomura
- Lynn Swann
- Erik Van Dillen
The book includes statistics and data points. It has been published in partnership with the San Mateo County Historical Association and complements the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame.
To celebrate the release of Cradle of Champions, a book signing will be held on Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. at the museum.
