A Redwood City postal carrier was robbed of his keys at gunpoint on Thursday, Aug. 10, according to a San Mateo County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The carrier, who was delivering mail on the 500 block of Rutherford Avenue in unincorporated Redwood City, was approached by a man with a handgun at about 2:20 p.m. The man then demanded the carrier’s U.S. Postal Service keys. The postal carrier was not injured, spokesman Sgt. Javier Acosta said.

The person is at large, and a joint investigation by the Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau and the United States Postal Inspector's Office is ongoing.

The suspect’s car was a black Charger, according to information given to a nearby resident by a detective that was distributed on the Nextdoor neighborhood social media site.

A spate of such robberies is ongoing, United States Postal Inspector Matthew Norfleet told the Pulse's sister media outlet, The Almanac, in early August regarding mail theft from postal boxes.

“Right now we have a huge, huge problem with letter carriers being robbed at gunpoint for their arrow keys, which is what we call the keys to use to access the mailboxes," Norfleet said.

Anyone with information or surveillance footage is asked to contact the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office at 650-363-4911.
