Good morning, Redwood City.
On Tuesday, the planning commission will decide whether to approve a permit for the demolition of an existing 1,320 sq. ft. house on 636 Teredo Drive to make way for a new two-story home that's 3,811 square feet. This new house will take up 57% of the land it's on. Usually, houses over 3,000 square feet or using more than 45% of their land get extra attention, and this new house meets both criteria.
After residents in the Mt. Carmel neighborhood raised the alarm about smaller homes being torn down and replaced by much larger ones, the city council looked into rules to help maintain the neighborhood's look and feel. They focused on the "Floor Area Ratio," or FAR, which compares a building's size to the size of its land. If a single-family home project exceeds 3,000 square feet or fills more than 45% of its land, it needs public feedback and the Planning Commission's approval.
The planning commission meets on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The Sequoia High School Alumni Association will present its 16th annual picnic on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the school's grounds.
