A man was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly stabbed a man near Sequoia Station on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

The alleged assailant is a 22-year-old male; the victim is 37 years old. Both are unhoused residents of Redwood City, Caltrain spokesman Dan Lieberman said.

A verbal altercation preceded the stabbing. The victim sustained a laceration to his head and a stab wound to his chest, Lieberman said. Medical attention was sought for the injuries.

The victim's condition hasn't been made public as yet.

The incident occurred at about 10:35 p.m., according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, which referred the case to San Mateo County Transit Bureau for investigation.

The alleged assailant was found and taken into custody two days later on Aug. 18, Lieberman said.

On Wednesday, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said his senior charging prosecutor reviewed the case and the DA's Office declined to file charges due to insufficient evidence.

"There were no witnesses, video or corroborating evidence. The victim initially denied being stabbed and it was not until the next day that he told investigators he had been stabbed. The evidence in the case was not sufficient for us to overcome the suspect’s claim of self-defense. We could not prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect did not act in self-defense, as we are required to prove," he said.

The case is therefore closed unless some other witness or evidence comes forth, he added.

Editor's Note: Redwood City Pulse's policy is to withhold the names of those arrested for most crimes until the District Attorney has determined there is sufficient evidence to file charges in the case. Read our guidelines here.
