Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Hello Redwood City,

A penny for each time I heard the phrase "back home" would make me a millionaire in a month! In keeping with Silicon Valley's start-up parlance, I like to call myself an early-stage immigrant.

I moved to the Bay Area from Mumbai, where I grew up, about nine months ago and I've caught myself saying "back home" at least once a day, across contexts. The interesting thing about these words is, I've heard people who've lived here for two, four, even six decades, utter the same phrase with equal passion. It really makes one ponder the meaning of home and the beautiful plurality therein.

While editing today's top story, a lovely piece on soccer player Jessika Cowart's recent success, I was reminded of these words. Jessika, a US-born Filipina, made her World Cup debut in New Zealand recently. She played for the Philippines, her mother's country of origin. That she sang the Philippine national anthem on the field brought tears to her grandfather's eyes. If you spot a typo in the story, let's blame it on my blurry vision, shall we?
