A rollover car crash and subsequent collision on Interstate 280 south near the State Route 92 overpass killed a 39-year-old San Francisco resident at 2:53 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, according to the Redwood City California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The woman, driving a black 2020 Volkswagen, made a sudden left turn while on 280, causing the car to veer off the roadway and collide with a concrete pillar. The Volkswagen then hit a metal guardrail and came to rest between the southbound lanes numbers one and two. At some point in the sequence, the Volkswagen rolled over.
A 2013 Honda, driven by a 31-year-old San Jose resident, was also heading south on 280 and approached the State Route 92 overpass in the number one lane at about 75 miles per hour. It collided with the Volkswagen, the CHP reported in a press release. Both the driver and his passenger, also a 31-year-old San Jose resident, got out of their car.
Medical personnel and multiple units from the Redwood City CHP responded to multiple 911 calls about the collisions. The driver of the Volkswagen was declared dead at the scene. The CHP states that it is unknown whether the woman was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
The Honda driver has been cleared of having any impairment from alcohol or drugs, the CHP stated. His passenger was taken by ambulance to Stanford Hospital after reporting she was experiencing pain.
The investigation continues, and CHP is asking that individuals who witnessed the collision contact Redwood City CHP Officer E. Jimenez at 650-779-2700.
