Seven local high school students — including one teenager from Redwood City — have been selected to serve as San Mateo County’s inaugural Youth Cultural Ambassadors.
According to the County Executive’s Office, the group of newly-assembled ambassadors will look to “build community through arts and culture with the goal of greater youth involvement in the community.”
The seven students were picked by the County’s Office of Arts and Culture after a competitive application process was conducted.
Claire Sonnenburg, a 17-year-old visual artist who resides in Redwood City, is among the prestigious first group of ambassadors chosen.
Other ambassadors include: Alexander Carreon, 17, visual artist from Foster City; Amelia Lauren Chen, 17, ballet dancer from Daly City; Mikaela George, 16, classical vocalist from Foster City; Lauren Lin, 17, Youth Poet Laureate from Burlingame; Daniel Strebulaev, 15, pianist from Atherton; and Keiya Wada, 15, cellist from Foster City.
As part of being an ambassador, each student will plan and carry out an initiative that engages the community, in addition to organizing an Ambassador’s Convening for middle and high school students in spring 2024.
For participating in the program, each student will receive $500.
