Good morning, Redwood City,
More inmate deaths at County Jail
A 34-year-old man was found dead in his cell at the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City on Sat. Oct. 21. This marks the second inmate death at the facility in two days and the fourth within a year. Officers administered CPR, but medical personnel later pronounced the man dead. He was housed in the jail's behavioral health unit. Initial reports suggest suicide as the cause, pending an official determination from the coroner's office. The string of inmate deaths has amplified calls for oversight, including from a local grassroots organization advocating for civilian oversight of the Sheriff's Office.
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a study session on Oct. 24 to discuss oversight of the Sheriff's Office amid growing concerns.
SUHSD teachers rally for higher wages
Teachers in the Sequoia Union High School District are advocating for higher salaries to match the Bay Area's high cost of living. During a recent school board meeting, members of the Sequoia District Teachers Association (SDTA) union stressed the district's difficulty in retaining quality educators due to insufficient pay and long commutes. Another protest is planned for Oct. 25. Student and teacher testimonials highlighted the urgency of the issue. They warned that low pay forces teachers to leave for more affordable areas, requiring constant hiring and training of new staff. We'll see how this plays out.
