A Redwood City sex registrant faces life in prison after Redwood City firefighters allegedly discovered child pornography on his computer screen following a medical emergency, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.
Richard Winkler, 75, was having a non-life-threatening medical issue in his bedroom on the 1400 block of Kentfield Avenue on Tuesday, Nov. 7, when the Redwood City Fire Department responded to a call. After attempts to contact Winkler failed, the apartment's manager let the firefighters into Winkler's home, where they found him in his bedroom and alleged explicit images that firefighters thought could be a juvenile on his computer screen, according to the police department. The discovery led them to notify police, according to a Redwood City Police Department press release.
The Redwood City Police Department seized all of Winkler's electronic devices, and additional child pornography images were found on those devices. After he was medically cleared, he was arrested and taken into custody, according to the release.
"I can't remember a time where somebody was arrested after needing an ambulance," Sean Gallagher, San Mateo County Assistant District Attorney, said.
Winkler, who is a registered sex offender, pleaded not guilty to possession of child pornography but was released on his own recognizance against the prosecution's objection during a court hearing Thursday, Nov. 9, the DA's Office said.
He returns to court on Dec. 13 for Superior Court Review, according to the DA's Office.
