This year’s rainfall totals are a little behind average, but meteorologists are optimistic about the remaining months ahead.

Yet, this week’s light and scattered rain forecast most likely won’t move those totals closer to normal, according to the National Weather Service.

Redwood City accumulated 5.46 inches since the beginning of the water year, which begins Oct.1 and ends Sept. 30.

Meteorologist Brian Garcia said this water year is at 80% of the average, which would be 7.78 inches of accumulated rain as of Monday, Jan. 8. Comparatively, this time last year, Redwood City received 16.40 inches of rain.

The previous year’s rainfall totals were an anomaly that residents shouldn’t expect every year, and this year’s precipitation pattern aligns closer to average water years, Garcia said.

According to Garcia, the current water is within a favorable range, falling between 80% and 110% of the normal range “because we still have a couple of months of our core wet season to get through.”
