A person was struck and killed by a southbound Caltrain just south of the Redwood City station on Tuesday morning, according to Caltrain spokesperson Randol White.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. at Chestnut Street when a pedestrian was on the tracks for unknown reasons, and train #406 stuck and killed the person, according to White. There were 174 passengers on the scene at the time of the collision, and no other injuries were reported, he said.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Transit Police Bureau, responsible for patrolling the Caltrain corridor, has taken charge of the investigation. The cause of the collision and the identity of the involved individual remain undetermined. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office, which arrived on the scene at 9:42 a.m., will release the identity of the individual at a later time, White said.

The tracks were reopened at 10:11 a.m.

“Caltrain reminds everyone to be safe around train tracks,” Caltrain said in its final email update.
