The Rotary Club of Redwood City is addressing menstrual inequity during Women’s History Month by organizing a donation drive to collect period products.
These products will be distributed to the community through the Redwood City Public Library’s Teen Center and Project READ.
The public is encouraged to contribute by donating hygiene products, purchasing items from an Amazon wishlist, or making a financial donation directly to the Rotary Club.
This effort responds to a significant issue highlighted in the “State of the Period” study by Thinx & PERIOD, which reports that over 80% of U.S. students have missed class time or know someone who has due to a lack of access to period products.
The study also notes that this problem disproportionately affects lower-income and students of color, particularly Latinx students, 23% of whom have had to choose between buying period products and basic necessities like food or clothing. The lack of proper menstrual hygiene is associated with negative health outcomes, including urinary tract infections.
