As a new resident of Redwood City, I am enjoying the many improvements that the city has worked hard to make a reality. The downtown area is lively every day of the week with frequent events and accessible and walkable streets that make for a great night out and offer many third places. I am impressed with the rate at which the city is advancing. I was even shocked to see that Waymo self-driving cars have made their way to my very own residential street.
This city is known for its prime location and revival, however, I would like to call attention to the antiquated road layouts and traffic congestion that are incredibly frustrating and even threatening resident safety. Though I was impressed by the walkability and beautification of the downtown area upon arrival, I was also intrigued by the immense congestion that confers on Woodside Road and El Camino and the rate at which pedestrian accidents occur on our city roads compared to other similarly sized cities.
The concerns for pedestrian safety as a result of outmoded transportation layouts and pieced together bike lanes and pedestrian improvements scattered throughout the city have gained some momentum over the past few months, which enlightens me as a new resident. I highly encourage Redwood City Pulse to continue its reporting to maintain momentum on such a pressing issue pushing city leaders to prioritize pedestrian safety.
I hope to offer a fresh perspective as a new resident who can see that the city’s transportation efforts need to catch up to the growth of the city.

The BEST way to make Redwood City streets safer is to “look both ways” before stepping off the curb.
