A dead bird in Redwood City has tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to the San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District.

That brings the total number of birds that have tested positive in the county in 2024 up to 23.

In late August, dead birds collected from Atherton (2 birds), Menlo Oaks (1 bird, unincorporated San Mateo County), and Menlo Park (5 birds) tested positive for West Nile virus. Earlier in the year, additional birds from Atherton (2 birds), Foster City (2 birds), Menlo Oaks (1 bird), Menlo Park (5 birds), North Fair Oaks (1 bird, unincorporated San Mateo County), San Carlos (1 bird), San Mateo (1 bird), and West Menlo Park (1 bird, unincorporated San Mateo County) were also found to be infected.

San Mateo County officials are urging residents to protect themselves and their families from mosquitoes by eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed, reporting biting mosquitoes to the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District at 650-344-8592, using an EPA-registered insect repellent when outdoors in the evening and early morning, and reporting dead birds to the West Nile virus hotline at 1-877-968-2473.
