A proposed redevelopment in Redwood Shores is drawing fire from local bird advocates who say it threatens sensitive wildlife habitat near Belmont Slough and ignores environmental concerns.
The Redwood Life project would expand the current site from 1 million to 3.3 million square feet over 25 years. City Council is set to review a slightly smaller alternative version of the plan at its meeting on Monday, April 14.
Chris MacIntosh with the San Mateo County Bird Alliance called the proposal “a measly” reduction. The group said the “objections of Redwood Shores residents and environmentalists are not being listened to and are being inadequately addressed.”
Concerns include 24/7 light and noise pollution, taller buildings up to 100 feet that could block sunlight over the slough, and potential contamination from building atop a capped landfill. “Insufficient studies have been done on the safety of the landfill,” the group said.
Residents can submit public comments by 5 p.m. Monday to publiccomment@redwoodcity.org or attend the 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road.
