A North Star Academy student was hit by a motorist outside of Orion Alternative School during drop-off at around 8:30 a.m. The middle schooler was on her way to school, traveling by bicycle.

Emergency responders, including police and paramedics, arrived at the scene shortly after.

The parents were at the site of the accident while their daughter received care. They told the North Star office that the student would be OK, according to a letter from the school’s principal, Erin Kekos. Specific details of the injury have not been disclosed.

“I am deeply grateful to the Orion staff for their immediate response,” Kekos wrote to the North Star community, “for looking after our student, and for notifying us without delay.”

The district’s director of communications, Jorge Quintana, did not know if the student was biking safely or not, but cautions drivers to be especially alert when driving near schools.

“Even though the morning rush can be very busy with everyone all trying to get somewhere,” Quintana said, “in a school zone we have little ones trying to do the same.”

He noted that many students in the district commute by bicycle and by foot, and encourages drivers to “slow down a little bit.”

Relatedly, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office will host a free car seat inspection event to help parents and caregivers ensure their child’s car seat is installed correctly. Certified inspectors will be at 690 Broadway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22. No appointment is needed to attend.
