Police in Redwood City are investigating after a man asked a young girl for her phone number, the department said Thursday.
On Wednesday at about 3:20 p.m., a 13-year-old girl got out of school for the day and was standing at the corner of Duane and Harrison streets when a gray sedan drove past her. The car then did a U-turn and stopped in front of her. The driver, a man in his 20s, rolled down his window and asked her if she knew where downtown was. She pointed in the direction of downtown and then the driver asked for her phone number, according to police. She declined, but then he asked her for her name, and she declined to give him that too. He eventually drove off.
The girl told her father, who contacted the school. The school then called the police.
Officers canvassed the area and have been unable to locate surveillance footage at this time, the department said. The investigation remains active.
Police commended the girl for reporting what happened and for not sharing any of her information with the stranger, the department said.
“While not every interaction with an unknown person is criminal in nature, juveniles should be reminded not to share personal information and to disengage from situations that make them uncomfortable,” the Redwood City Police Department said.
