September 17, 1933 – May 15, 2022
Barbara was born in San Francisco, California on September 17, 1933, and returned home to heaven on May 15th, 2022. She died peacefully at home after a short illness.
She grew up in San Francisco and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area all her life. Barbara attended Lone Mountain College in San Francisco and trained to be an elementary school teacher. She taught in the San Mateo-Foster City School District for 25 years teaching First and Second Grade students.
Barbara married James Carmody in 1956. Barbara and Jim were active in their church as Eucharistic Ministers and as facilitators for Marriage Preparation classes. In later years, they were members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Other activities for Barbara in the community include Girl Scout Leader, and Election Day official for many years. Barbara was active with the local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She especially enjoyed playing bridge and the book clubs offered by the AAUW. After retiring from teaching, Barbara and Jim loved to travel and spend time with their six children and seven grandchildren.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Louis Bernard Zwack and Luell Elizabeth Driscoll; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Faber and her grandson, Patrick Knight Carmody. Barbara is survived by her six children: Bob (Katie), Cathy Walters (Bob), Mary Ruth Cross (James), John, Paul, Thomas and six grandchildren: Megan, Nicole, Bryan Walters, Susie (Cross) Cruz (Jason), Shaun, and Elle.
A vigil and Rosary will be held at Crippen and Flynn Carlmont Chapel, 1111 Alameda de Las Pulgas, Belmont on Sunday May 22, at 2pm. There will be a Funeral Mass at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, 600 Columbia Drive, San Mateo at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2022. Reception in Parish Hall following the Mass.
