Karl Allen Hillary, a resident of San Carlos, passed away on February 3, 2023. He is survived by his children Tom, Sue and Pam, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was born on June 13th, 1922 to Carrie Doyle, a single mom in Youngstown, Ohio. He was loved and raised by his grandmother Ada Beck and survived the Great Depression.
He graduated from Sebring High School in Ohio, class of 1940. Not only was he president of his class, but he was an accomplished football player. His success as an athlete led to a football scholarship at Kent State University. Throughout his life he continued his education, including studying and graduating from National Radio and TV school in 1950 and the Air Electronic Maintenance School in 1953. When Pearl Harbor was bombed he was inspired to join the Navy.
Much of his adult life was spent in service to our country. He served in the Navy for 2 years during World War 2. He received a service commendation for his time as an Aviation Radioman during World War II for over 1100 hours of service over the Pacific as a part of the Navy. He was stationed in California where he met his beloved wife, Jessie. Karl later re-enlisted into the air force. They moved all around the world as a military family including living in such places as Goose Bay Labrador, Germany, and Florida.
Karl eventually retired to beautiful California where they lived in their house on Club Dr. in San Carlos for many decades. He was married to Jessie for over forty years. Karl was truly a self -made man. Despite his humble beginnings, he worked hard and strove to succeed. With over 20 years of military service, he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force and finished his career as a Federal Aviation Inspector. His work ethic and determination are inspirational. He was the most resilient man you could imagine, the Frank Sinatra song "I did it My Way" sums him up perfectly. His personality was larger than life. Karl will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will always be in our hearts and minds.
