Local residents who have died recently include:
Valerie Taylor, 72, a former Palo Alto resident who was born in Detroit and later moved to Atlanta, who graduated from Harvard University, who worked as a chemist for 18 years, who was an accomplished cellist who performed with several Bay Area orchestras including the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, who taught Tai Chi and performed as a jazz and belly dancer, and who was president of the Palo Alto Beatles fan club and attended the band’s final concert at Candlestick Park, died Aug. 12.
Carol Ann Clifford Mitchell, 90, of Palo Alto, who was born in Ventura, moved to Palo Alto as a child, attended local schools and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in psychology, who later moved with her husband, John, and their three children to Madison, Wisconsin, who enjoyed canoeing, cross-country skiing and ice skating, and who in 1997 returned to Palo Alto and served on the board of the Palo Alto Historical Association, died on Aug. 8.
Mary Long Fitch, 78, a Palo Alto resident who was born in Toledo, Ohio, earned a master’s in nursing from NYU and a doctor of education degree from University of San Francisco, who was a critical care nurse at Stanford and the Palo Alto VA Hospital for 28 years, who loved politics, dancing and classical music, who argued for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and who battled MS for 48 years, died Aug. 28.
Francis Dubreuil, 77, of Pasadena, who was born in Massachusetts, received a master’s degree from Stanford Graduate School of Business and who went on to become a partner at Goodwin Procter & Hoar in Boston and at Wilson Sonsini in Palo Alto, focusing on family estate planning and tax law, and who was an avid student of history who loved libraries, college campuses and the halls of Congress, died on Aug. 22.
Kathleen Claudon, 80, of Lodi, who graduated from University of California, Berkeley, lived in Palo Alto for 25 years, worked in the architectural design business KM Designs, later named Claudon Designs, who design many kitchens and bathrooms in the Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Mountain View area, who enjoyed photography and who was a modern dancer, gardener and painter, died on Sept. 1.
George Nelson Andrews, 95, a Menlo Park resident who was born in Redwood City and had a long career as a Bell Systems lineman, climbing poles in all kinds of weather, who was a member of the Menlo Park Historical Association, and who had a lifelong passion for trains and military vehicles, enjoyed rail travel and owned a Model T Ford and a former Army Jeep, died on June 16.
Michael Isaac Almond, 59, a San Francisco resident and graphic designer who was raised in Palo Alto, where he attended Gunn High School, who earned a BFA from Brown University and produced publications for Planned Parenthood and AIDS-related nonprofits, who later did design work for tech companies, who published more than a dozen stories on Medium and was working on a volume called “Imperfect Crimes,” a chronicle of childhood and coming of age in Palo Alto, died July 4.
