Local residents who have died recently include:
Barbara Anne Friedland, 95, of Menlo Park, who was born in San Francisco and worked 29 years as a teacher who excelled at teaching children to read, who struggled with alcoholism before becoming sober, was dedicated to AA and sponsored over 100 women working toward sobriety, who had boundless energy and was an avid reader and a lifelong learner, died on Aug. 22.
Richard Leon Hoadley, 80, a Redwood City resident who was born in New York, founded Bay Brokerage Company with his wife in Belmont, who enjoyed tennis and golf and played on several local basketball and baseball teams, who belonged to the Sharon Heights Country Club and loved traveling and telling a good joke, died on Sept. 22.
Robert Mackinlay Polhemus, 90, of Palo Alto, a professor emeritus who was on the faculty of the Stanford English Department for 47 years and served as the chair of the department and the Faculty Senate, whose interests included 19th-century British literature, 20th-century British fiction, the visual arts and cultural psychology, and who enjoyed body-surfing at Stinson Beach and hiking in the Sierras, died on Aug. 3
