The Automobile Association of America released new average gas prices this weekend for every state, and California's average price for a gallon of gasoline is the highest in the United States.

The national average for a gallon of gasoline is $4.009 as of Sunday, according to AAA.

Topping the nation is California, which has the highest price averages for regular, mid-grade, premium and diesel, according to AAA.

For regular gas in the Golden State, the state's gas price average is $5.288 as of today. Mid-grade average is $5.420, premium is $5.564 and diesel is $5.598.

The West also leads the rest of the nation with the highest price gas averages for regular. Following California is Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.

AAA said an increase in gas demand, along with a reduction in total supply, is contributing to price increases, but increasing oil prices continue to play a leading role in pushing prices higher. Prices at the pump will likely continue to rise as crude prices continue to climb.
