Redwood City police used a drone to arrest a man suspected of dealing drugs in the area of the Downtown Library on Tuesday evening.
The Police Department deployed a drone to the area near the library at 1044 Middlefield Road in response to multiple complaints about people drinking alcohol, using drugs and causing disturbances on Tuesday, which was the Cinco de Mayo holiday.
At about 5:15 p.m., officers monitoring the drone saw someone carrying a satchel and riding a bicycle make a hand-to-hand transaction that they believed involved the sale of narcotics before riding away, police said.
Officers used the drone to track the suspect, who allegedly discarded his satchel while trying to flee when police tried to detain him. He was taken into custody a short time later and identified as a 31-year-old Redwood City man. Officers found the satchel, which had suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl and a digital scale, according to police.
The person who allegedly purchased the narcotics was identified as a 73-year-old man who was cited for possession of a controlled substance and then released, police said.
The 31-year-old suspect was booked into jail on suspicion of possession of narcotics for sale, destroying or concealing evidence, resisting a peace officer, and a probation violation.
