The Redwood City Pulse and visual journalist Magali Gauthier took second place for a photo presentation telling the story of last year’s Dia de los Muertos celebration. The award was presented by the California News Publishers Association during ceremonies last month in Los Angeles.

Gauthier’s award was chosen for recognition among other entries in publications of similar size.

“These photos represented the day well with a variety of photos and great technical shots in low light,” judges noted.

Dia de los Muertos was celebrated on Nov. 5, 2023, on Redwood City’s Courthouse Square. It is an important annual event that honors the lives of people who have died and recalls the Mexican heritage shared by many local residents.

Veronica Escamez, founder of Casa Circulo Cultural and the organizer of the event, said she wanted to create a space for community by recognizing the tradition. Gauthier, who worked alongside writer Nicholas Mazzoni in producing the Pulse’s story that day, attempted to bring the colorful, vivid ceremonies home to readers and capture the true meaning of the event.

The Pulse’s award was among 31 CNPA California Journalism Awards earned by Embarcadero Media Foundation newspapers and websites this contest season.
