In Redwood City, residents are preparing to make their message clear: “We don’t put up with would-be kings.”
That phrase is a rallying cry for the growing “No Kings” movement and will take center stage Saturday at 500 County Center, where protesters plan to join millions across the country in demonstrations against what organizers call President Donald Trump’s “authoritarian overreach.”
The Redwood City gathering is part of a national day of peaceful protest spanning more than 2,700 locations. Local organizers describe “No Kings” as a nonviolent call to defend democracy and reject the idea of unchecked presidential power.
Protests are also planned in San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose, Oakland and Santa Rosa. In Palo Alto, a march beginning at 11:30 a.m. will lead to Rinconada Cultural Park for a “Democracy Fair.” The San Francisco event is expected to draw one of the largest Bay Area crowds and will march from Sue Bierman Park to Civic Center Plaza at 2 p.m., followed by a rally at 3:30 p.m.
Indivisible SF, one of the main organizing groups, said in a statement: “Trump wants to be a dictator, a monarch, a tyrant. He’s trying to destroy everything America stands for.”
Organizers say the “No Kings” protests build on a summer wave of similar events that drew millions nationwide. Saturday’s demonstrations, they say, are a reminder that “America belongs to its people — not to kings.”
