The two people who died in an early morning blaze at a liquor store last Monday have been identified, Redwood City police announced.
One of the deceased was Benigno Nuguid Pare, 56, the manager of Avenue Liquors, located at 2147 Roosevelt Ave. He would allegedly sleep in the shop, Palo Alto Daily Post reported.
The other was Anil Kumar Sharma, 25. No other information is known about Sharma at this point.
Police and the Redwood City Fire Department arrived at the liquor store around 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 3 to begin containing the fire, which reportedly had fully engulfed the building. During their efforts, they opened the roof and found the two bodies inside the store. Both were deceased and showed “severe burns.”
Authorities are still unsure of why the individuals were inside the building when the fire began and are working to determine the cause of the fire and the events leading up to it. According to the initial press release about the structure fire, the store owner is cooperating with the investigation.
The building’s facade is not noticeably charred, though a noxious smell was detectable hundreds of feet from the scene on Monday. The strip mall parking lot was closed to the public and blocked off with yellow tape for the hours following the fire.
This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Redwood City Police Department at (650) 780-7100.
