A 23-year-old man who died in a Redwood City jail in January suffered a seizure that was due to complications of an opioid withdrawal, San Mateo County sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.
Anthony Harding died on the morning of Jan. 14 after a staff nurse in a detox unit at the Maguire Correctional Facility noticed he had difficulty breathing. First responders arrived but Harding died shortly afterward.
The county coroner’s and district attorney’s offices recently shared the findings of their investigations into the death. The coroner’s report determined that chronic abuse of fentanyl was a factor in his death, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Harding during this time of unimaginable loss,” Sheriff Christina Corpus said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of those in our custody is one of our highest priorities. I am sharing the results of the independent investigations with the community as part of my commitment to transparency.”
