The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that it had received a $285,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to enhance road safety.
The grant will run through September 2025 and aims to reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on San Mateo County roads.
According to the Sheriff’s office, the grant will fund various initiatives and resources to support its ongoing enforcement and education programs. These include sobriety and driver’s license checkpoints to deter impaired driving and high-visibility enforcement operations to stop drivers violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.
The grant will also fund initiatives to increase awareness, such as community presentations on traffic safety issues and enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies.
Other goals include addressing dangerous driving behaviors that threaten the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians, conducting enforcement operations on violations that often cause car crashes and training sheriff’s office personnel in sobriety tests, roadside impaired driving enforcement and drug recognition expert certification.
