The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting on Oct. 14 to make the final decision on whether to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus after she appealed the board’s previous decision to remove her on June 24, 2025.

In August, the board conducted a 10-day hearing on her appeal from which retired Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James Emerson issued an advisory opinion that the board has cause to remove Corpus.

Emerson cited four separate causes to remove Corpus: conflict of interest due to her alleged relationship with Victor Aenlle, retaliation against the head of the deputy sheriff union, arresting the head of the union without probable cause and retaliation against a captain.

The board’s power to remove an elected sheriff was established earlier this year after voters approved Measure A in March. The measure amended the county charter to temporarily give the Board of Supervisors the  power to remove the sheriff with cause, provided that four-fifths of the board votes in favor. Previously, removal of an elected sheriff required either a criminal conviction or a recall election.

The board’s meeting on the final decision will be open to the public. Four-fifths of the board must vote to remove Corpus.
