Caltrain services were delayed for hours on Monday due to a power-related incident at San Mateo and the Redwood City Caltrain stations.

The outage in Redwood City caused major delays throughout the day, causing vehicles to turn back around in the street to avoid a stalled Caltrain on the tracks.

By 3:34 p.m. in Redwood City, power had been restored, according to emergency personnel and Caltrain staff.

“Trains should be back underway shortly, thanks to our passengers for their patience during this incident,” said Caltrain Public Information Officer Dan Lieberman.

Caltrain reminds the community that “it is both extremely dangerous to interfere with overhead wires and a felony to maliciously damage or obstruct train tracks in the state of California.”

The incident comes as Caltrain celebrated its fully electrified service on Saturday, with hosted gatherings across its network, including in Redwood City and Palo Alto, where local leaders and riders celebrated the official switch.

  1. I’m confused. Please tell us the cause, or what you know about the cause. “Power related”? Did someone tamper with equipment? Was it too much for the grid? Equipment failure? Did you ask for that information?
