Over the weekend, Redwood City police stopped about 400 vehicles, issued more than 20 citations, and arrested three individuals during an operation that included multiple DUI checkpoints.

Among the 21 citations, 17 were for operating a vehicle unlicensed and four were for moving violations, police said.

Of the three arrests, one was for an outstanding DUI warrant and suspended driver’s license, one was for resisting police officers while passing through the checkpoint, and one was for driving on the wrong side of the highway at the checkpoints, according to police.

The checkpoints were located at the intersection of El Camino Real and Carlos Street from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., and at the intersection of Woodside Road and Bay Road from 11:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., on Saturday and Friday.

The Redwood City Police Department said in a statement that the primary purpose of the operation was to take suspected impaired drivers off the roads.

Checkpoint locations are determined by the frequency of reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The latest data from the California Office of Traffic Safety reveals 41 victims were either killed or injured in Redwood City collisions in 2023, and 109 drivers were arrested for intoxication.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant through the California Cannabis Grant Program.
