On Thursday, Sept. 5, SamTrans bus schedules were rearranged after about 30% of bus operators called out sick in the morning, according to a SamTrans press release. SamTrans stated it has been preparing for a sick-out that was expected to happen on Aug. 26 and 27 after the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1574 rejected a 3-year contract proposal.
The bus agency is utilizing previous planning to ease service disruptions for riders and advises all customers to seek alternative transportation options for today and Friday, according to the release. SamTrans prioritized school service this morning without disruption.
“Our top priority is the transportation needs of the people of San Mateo County,” said SamTrans General Manager and CEO April Chan in a statement. “We understand that many of our riders do not have alternative transportation options, which is why we take today’s sick-out very seriously. We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we work to minimize the impacts of this unexpected operator shortage.”
Route 292 and 122 are operated by contractors and are not affected by the sick-out. RediWheels and RediCoast paratransit services will also not experience a disruption of services.
SamTrans states that it is “committed to finding a contract resolution and is prepared to work collaboratively with ATU members.”
ATU Local 1574 represents nearly 400 members including bus operators, utility workers, storekeepers and customer service representatives.
Although alternative schedules will not be posted, SamTrans will be “prioritizing service to schools, low frequency routes and and first/last schedules of the day,” according to SamTrans Public Information Officer Randol White.
