The city of Redwood City is bracing itself for a midweek storm expected to bring rain, gusty winds and a slight chance of thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.
Rain began early Wednesday as an early-season storm that moved in Tuesday evening continued to sweep across the Peninsula, bringing steady showers, gusty winds and a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms through the afternoon. Forecasters estimate Redwood City could see around a half-inch of rain, with higher totals in nearby hills. Wind gusts may reach 25 to 45 mph, raising the risk of downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.
Also on Wednesday morning, strong winds downed power to thousands of customers in the North Bay, including an elementary school in northern Sonoma County that canceled classes for the day.
As of 7:40 a.m., PG&E reported that 5,670 customers were without power in the Bay Area, and 4,100 of those were located in Marin and Sonoma counties, and another 600 on the Peninsula.
Strong winds may bring down trees, scatter debris, and cause power outages, AlertSF warned Wednesday.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and windows, charge electronic devices, and allow extra time for travel. Commuters should check transit schedules for possible delays.
The city alerted residents on social media Tuesday evening, urging people to secure outdoor belongings, use caution on slick roads and avoid driving through flooded areas. Residents can sign up for real-time emergency notifications at SMCAlert.info.
