Woodside residents were ordered to shelter in place Thursday morning after a gas leak was reported on Woodside Road near Martin Lane around 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 1. The shelter-in-place order lasted for about an hour, until Woodside Fire Protection District personnel cleared the scene at 11:45 a.m., fire officials said.

Firefighters said that construction workers accidentally drilled into a residential gas supply line while working on fencing and fractured it, causing the leak. Martin Lane resident Orlando Nell said the area smelled like rotten eggs.

One residence in the 3300 block of Woodside Road was evacuated, along with the workers onsite, according to Woodside Fire Battalion Chief Keenan Hird.

PG&E also responded to the scene and the gas line was secured by 11:27 a.m.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control while the eastbound lane of Woodside Road was closed during the incident, according to Woodside Fire officials.
