Acclaimed author and professor Jesmyn Ward comes to Kepler’s to discuss her latest novel, “Let Us Descend.” The book follows Annis, sold by the enslaver who fathered her, as she’s forced to journey south from the Carolinas down to a plantation in Louisiana. Along the way, she turns to cherished family memories and stories for strength and comfort, and “opens herself to a world beyond this world, one teeming with spirits: of earth and water, of myth and history … ” Kepler’s website states.
Ward is also the author of “Salvage the Bones,” “Sing, Unburied, Sing,” “Where the Line Bleeds,” and “Men We Reaped.” She is a two-time National Book Award winner and a recipient of a MacArthur Fellows genius grant. The conversation at Kepler’s will be moderated by writer and Santa Clara University professor Kai Harris, author of “What the Fireflies Knew.”
Sept. 5, 7 p.m., Kepler’s Books, 1010 El Camino Real #100, Menlo Park (virtual admission via Zoom also available); $16.74-$53.99 depending on ticket type; eventbrite.com.
