A police drone helped officers locate a nonverbal child who had left his elementary school and was running in traffic, Redwood City police said Friday.Â
The 10-year-old was found in the 600 block of Woodside Road about 11:10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, police said.
Police were called to the school after its staff couldn’t locate the youth. Officers began searching classrooms and other areas of the campus in case he was hidden somewhere on the grounds.
While the search was under way, police received a 911 call from someone reporting a young child running in and near traffic on Woodside Road.
A drone involved in the school search was redirected to the area and spotted the child running along the road, police said.Â
“The drone maintained continuous visual contact with the student and provided responding officers with his location until they were able to safely reach him and prevent him from entering traffic again,” police said.
Officers stayed with the boy until his mother arrived and reunited him with his family, police said.
