Melissa Schmidt, the girls’ soccer coach at Sequoia High School, has been named the California Girls Soccer Coach of the Year by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
The award recognizes her leadership in soccer coaching, her focus on developing student-athletes, and her contributions to the school and the local community.
During Schmidt’s tenure, Sequoia High School’s soccer team secured four league championships and made nine appearances in section playoffs, including a streak of seven consecutive years.
The 2022-23 season marked a significant milestone, with the team winning its first Central Coast Section (CCS) Championship. The team also advanced to the NorCal playoffs semi-finals under Schmidt’s coaching.
Schmidt was also recognized on a broader scale, being selected as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Section 7 regional nominee, representing states including California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah.
She was among eight national candidates for the NFHS National Coach of the Year award.
