The Redwood City Library Foundation is once again raising a glass to free expression.
On Oct. 8, the nonprofit will host its fourth annual Upscale Pub Crawl in downtown Redwood City to celebrate Banned Books Week. Participants can stop by local pubs for discounted drinks and snacks, while learning about the history of censorship and the books that have been banned or challenged over the years.
This year’s national theme is “Censorship Is So 1984: Read for Your Rights” — a nod to George Orwell’s classic novel. According to the American Library Association, book challenges have surged in recent years, with thousands of titles pulled from classrooms and libraries across the country.
The Foundation said the event is a chance to highlight those issues while supporting local businesses and raising money for Redwood City’s libraries. Foundation representatives will be on hand at each stop to share information and answer questions.
Tickets are $40 through Sept. 12, with the price rising to $50 afterward. Proceeds benefit library programs and services.
The Foundation is also promoting a free documentary screening, The Librarians, on Sept. 22 for those who want a deeper look at the challenges facing libraries nationwide.
