Bob Dylan, who many believe is the greatest singer-songwriter of the 20th century, once said: “Don’t ask me nuthin’ about nuthin’ I just might tell you the truth.”
What I am about to share with you has been discussed in numerous circles for decades. It may even be considered controversial. I am not sure what you have seen or heard about how the world’s greatest film-producing machine came to be, but this is the actual genesis.
Let’s turn time back and find out.
The roots of Hollywood lie in Eastern Europe, where the men who founded the great studios all originated. And believe it or not, all were born within a few hundred miles of each other. What’s even more remarkable is that they ended up within 15 miles of each other in Southern California.
It began in the 1920’s, and for over 30 years, Hollywood studios were all run by a group of Jewish immigrants.
THE MOGULS:
- Harry Warner, of the Warner Brothers, who was responsible for bringing sound to motion pictures, was born in eastern Poland.
- Samuel Goldwyn of MGM, whose actual last name was Goldfish, was also from Poland.
- Carl Lemly, who founded Universal Studios, came from a small town in Germany.
- Louis B. Mayer, who provided the best of the MGM musicals, came from a small Russian village.
- William Fox and Paramount’s Adolph Zucker both came from small villages in Hungary.
Fox’s studio subsequently merged with 20th Century Pictures to form 20th Century Fox.
