A 17-year-old student was arrested at Redwood High School for allegedly bringing a handgun on school grounds.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 12, around 9 a.m., when Redwood High School officials, having learned the student might bring a loaded handgun to campus, scheduled a meeting with the student and his mother to discuss attendance issues and requested police presence for security.

When Redwood City Police Department officers arrived, they found the student and his mother in the school office. The student allegedly refused a pat search for weapons and attempted to flee, police said. According to police, the encounter led to a struggle during which he disclosed he was carrying a firearm.

Police said they then found a Glock 27 handgun with a loaded magazine in his waistband and an additional loaded magazine on him. Officers sustained minor injuries during the altercation.

After the arrest, officers searched the student’s residence in East Palo Alto, where they allegedly discovered additional ammunition.

The minor was then booked into the San Mateo County Youth Services Center on multiple felony charges.
