Longtime Sequoia Union High School District Trustee Carrie Du Bois will not seek reelection. She was first elected in 2011 with 25% of the vote and ahead of the runner-up by 2,000 votes when all trustees represented the entire district.

“It was a hard decision for me to make because I’ve spent a lot of time working for public education over the past 25 years,” she told this news organization in a statement. “I’ve served as a school board member for 19 of those years. My youngest son will be graduating from college next year, so I do feel it’s time to pass the baton to the next generation of parents in the district.”

Before joining the SUHSD board, she served on the San Carlos Elementary School District board.

After SUHSD changed to trustees representing districts instead of at-large, she represented Area B, which includes parts of San Carlos and Belmont.

Two candidates have filed to run for Area B: former student Sequoia board trustee Jacob Yuryev and Summit Prep Executive Director Mary Beth Thompson.

Yuryev said in a statement, “Carrie Du Bois has dedicated herself to the students of SUHSD and the community. She’s an example of selfless leadership and it was an honor to serve with her as a SUHSD student trustee. I appreciate her example.”

Thompson said in a statement: “Carrie DuBois has a remarkable ability to see the big picture, consistently advocating with unwavering dedication for the thousands of students who rely on SUHSD for their education. She is leaving big shoes to fill, and I am grateful for the opportunity to pick up the torch and serve our zone with the same compassion and tenacity.”

The district could not be reached for comment.

Due to her decision not to run, the deadline for candidates to file is extended to Aug. 14 at 5 p.m.
