Isabella Chu officially qualified for the District 3 election on August 6, setting up a contest against current City Council Vice Mayor Lissette Espinoza-Garnica.

This isn’t the first time the two have gone head to head. Chu previously ran for the District 3 seat in 2020 but was defeated by Espinoza-Garnica.

This election could have significant implications for the city’s leadership. If Chu prevails in November, Espinoza-Garnica will be removed from the mayoral rotation, potentially paving the way for Elmer Martinez Saballos to become the new mayoral candidate.

Martinez Saballos was appointed to the city council in 2022 following the abrupt departure of Michael Smith

Chu is a Redwood City Planning Commissioner and the Neighborhood Association Co-Chair for Friendly Acres. She said she wishes for greater integration between the neighborhoods south of Woodside and the broader city, focusing on infrastructure improvements and expanded opportunities.

Chu also serves as associate director at Stanford.

One of Chu’s priorities is ensuring that the benefits of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act extend to District 3. The Act aims to deliver clean drinking water and eliminate lead service lines. It also seeks to improve and modernize the nation’s infrastructure, including transportation, energy, water systems and broadband.

“I’d like to see more of the prosperity, opportunity, and benefits of living in Silicon Valley make their way to my neighborhood,” Chu said.
