Redwood City’s School District Board of Trustees will appoint a member for the District III seat after no candidate filed to run in the November election following Janet Lawson’s decision not to seek reelection.
This has left a parental advocate organization, Parents for Redwood City Schools, or P4RCS, “disappointed,” according to one member.
Neither candidate for the District I and District IV seats has publicly responded to multiple inquiries for comment, and the group says it hopes for more information before the election.
“As a group of parent volunteers, we’re fairly disappointed both by the outreach done by the district to ensure those spots would be filled and by the involvement of the community,” Carlo Contavalli, a P4RCS member, said.
While District III has no candidate, Districts I and IV each have one candidate running unopposed.
This is not the first time candidates have run unopposed for the Board of Trustees, as current member Mike Wells also ran unopposed in 2020.
“We only know of candidates that reached out to us or information from the public board meetings,” Contavalli said.
The Board of Trustees will interview potential candidates for the District III seat on Oct. 9 during a board meeting before selecting a member.
During a Sept. 25 meeting, the board said it had 12 qualified candidates who would move on to the interview process.
