San Mateo County is hosting the first of its five planned gun buyback events on Saturday, one month after the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a grant of more than $200,000 to create the buyback program.

At the drive-through gun buyback, individuals will be able to turn in firearms to law enforcement anonymously, with no questions asked, and receive up to $100 per handgun, shotgun or rifle and $200 per assault weapon, according to a county news release. Recipients can choose to keep the cash incentive or donate it to selected nonprofit organizations. Individuals will not receive compensation for any ammunition turned in, the release said

According to a board memo, county officials hope to get about 450 guns back from the community at their first event.

The Measure K Reserves grant will support a series of gun buyback events through 2023. The program will be supported by an additional $100,000 from the Sheriff’s Office and $67,000 raised by Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback, a local community group.

Supervisors Dave Pine, Don Horsley, Sheriff Carlos Bolanos, Assembly member Kevin Mullin, Dr. Bradd Silver and Danielle Lacampagne, Co-chairs of Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback and San Carlos Mayor Laura Parmer Lohan will all be speaking at Saturday’s event.

Additional events are planned for 2022.
