The San Mateo County Sheriff's office received more than 400 firearms at a recent gun buyback event in San Carlos, San Mateo County officials said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

Four hundred and twenty-five guns were sold to the sheriff's office, officials said. While the sheriff's office didn't quite meet its goal of 450 guns, it received more than 100 firearms an hour during the four-hour-long event.

Hundreds of people attended the event, which took place last Saturday, Dec. 11 on Skyway Road in San Carlos, officials said. The gun buyback event was the first in five planned events throughout the county. It came one month after the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a grant of more than $200,000 to create the buyback program.

"The total includes six assault weapons and three 'ghost' guns that are untraceable," the county said in the Facebook post.

Sponsors for Saturday’s buyback included the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback, officials said.
