Three people, including a Redwood City man, have been charged with murder in connection with a shooting that left a man dead on a sidewalk in front of a San Jose home, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney.

San Jose police officers responded to the 13000 block of Pfeifle Avenue in San Jose just after 6 p.m. on April 16 on a report of a shooting, officials reported. Upon arrival, police found a “spent 9mm caliber shell casing” next to a “pool of blood,” according to a document used by prosecutors to establish probable cause.

The victim, identified by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office as a 28-year-old from Los Banos in Merced County, was taken to Kaiser San Jose by a bystander after a witness found the gunshot victim on the sidewalk in front of a home, according to a probable cause statement. The victim was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound upon arrival to the hospital, according to police.

Police identified the suspects as 31-year-old Daniel Macias of Redwood City, 26-year-old Ricardo Padilla and 28-year-old Jocelyn Velazquez. The three were arrested on June 22 and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

San Jose Police detectives said the three were involved in the shooting that occurred on Saturday, April 16 after a pop-up event at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) parking lot and were seen fleeing the scene by a witness.  One witness who spoke to police said he “heard shots and realized the victim was injured.”

Police used surveillance footage and phone records to track the three suspects to the scene of the homicide and spoke to several witnesses who placed them near the VTA at the time of the alleged crime, according to police. Police also said they were able to link a vehicle that they believe belonged to the suspects and that was caught on surveillance cameras near the VTA.

Video footage shows Padilla involved in a fight with another man that occurred near the VTA light rail station parking lot on the 3400 hundred block of Monterey Road shortly before the shooting, police said. Velazquez was also seen in the video, according to official records.

Macias was arrested in Redwood City by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. Padilla was arrested in the City of Oakland, and Velazquez was picked up in San Jose. The suspects are being held without bail, and have been charged with one count of murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony, prosecutors said. According to the felony complaint, “the manner in which the crime was carried out indicates planning, sophistication, or professionalism.”

This is San Jose's eighth homicide in 2022.
