Firefighters responded to a blaze that broke out early Monday morning near the Redwood City Public Works department.
Around half-past midnight, several engines and a truck were dispatched to the scene of a trash fire along southbound Highway 101 at the Woodside Road off-ramp, according to Battalion Chief Chuck Lax.
Some wood pallets and vegetation burned in the fire, which was under control by 12:45 a.m., Lax said. There were no injuries or damage to the surrounding property, and the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
Though no one appeared to be living there then, Lax said the new wood pallets were indicative of “the beginning of [a homeless camp].” The area has seen several trash fires in the past, he added.
“It’s a homeless camp activity area,” he said. “That’s one of the spots that gets cleaned up.”
As to the cause of the fire, Lax said there will be no further investigation. He declined to speculate, explaining that any possible evidence pointing to the origin likely burned in the blaze.
“There was nothing left for us to figure out what might have occurred,” he said.
Still, he agreed that the debris didn’t just spontaneously combust and cited the recent uptick in homeless camp fires in Redwood City.
“It wasn’t just someone who threw a cigarette butt out their window,” he said. “There’s a lot of fire activity going on right now, and it’s not just accidental.”
