Good afternoon, Redwood City!
A historic resignation
After a week of unconfirmed rumors and closed-door meetings, Dr. Darnise Williams has stepped down as superintendent of the Sequoia Union High School District.
The announcement, read by former Board President Carrie Du Bois, came less than two years after Williams became the district’s first Black woman to hold the position. While Du Bois called Williams’ apparent resignation a “mutual agreement” between the superintendent and the board, many people strongly disagreed.
Students, teachers and members of the community accused the Board of Trustees of anti-Blackness, a lack of transparency and destroying trust in the district, in a public condemnation that lasted nearly an hour. The big questions of the night: What happened, exactly? Why, just months after receiving a positive evaluation and contract extension, did Williams suddenly depart? And who will be the new superintendent?
We’ve got the latest for you here.
Give a toy, have a blast
Tomorrow is the LAST DAY to visit Redwood City's magical, local winter wonderland and toy drive. Stop by 890 Jefferson Ave. for free-flowing hot chocolate, dozens of themed Christmas trees and other festive surprises. Entry is free, with a recommended toy or other donation, all of which will go to children throughout the Bay Area.
"Christmas is my favorite time of the year. And it is so hard for me to imagine kids not waking [up] with new toys," said founder, Carolyn Hoskins.
Stay tuned for more! And happy Thursday.

Leah
