Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Good morning, Redwood City.

It’s with an extremely heavy heart that I write today’s newsletter. Yesterday afternoon, less than two days since the mass shooting in Monterey Park, we learned that tragedy struck our own community.

Seven people were killed and another injured when 67-year-old Chunli Zhao opened fire in two separate locations in the Half Moon Bay area. This marks the state’s fourth mass shooting of the year—and it’s not even the end of January.

“Our hearts are broken,” said Dave Pine, president of the county board of supervisors. “This is a horrific event, one that we would never imagine would occur in San Mateo County. Gun violence in this country is at completely unacceptable levels, and it’s really hit home tonight.”

During a press conference held outside the Hall of Justice in Redwood City this morning, Sheriff Christina Corpus said the attack appeared to be an instance of “workplace violence,” but no more is known about the suspect's relationship to the victims. An arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow.

Here you can find everything we know so far. We’ll continue to update our coverage as new information becomes available.

Stay safe and take care.

Your reporter,

Leah
