The county of San Mateo has dispatched its Crisis Response Team (CRT) to Half Moon Bay after seven people were killed in a mass shooting event on Monday.
“As we collectively mourn the loss of life in Half Moon Bay, the county of San Mateo is providing mental health counselors and other support to the community,” said Michelle Durand, chief communications officer for the county, in a media release on Jan. 24.
The CRT stems from the county’s Behavioral Health and Recovery Services and has been meeting with families in the reunification center and other locations in Half Moon Bay.
CRT staff are trained in crisis response, suicide prevention and other mental health interventions. They provide individual and group psychological first aid, grief support counseling, connection to needed ongoing services and crisis intervention counseling free of charge to residents in need.
The county is also working with the city of Half Moon Bay and local agencies to provide temporary housing, meals and other services to those directly impacted by the shootings.

The suspect in the shooting event did turn himself into the authorities on Monday and is expected to be arraigned Wednesday. All matters regarding the shooting – including the investigation, court proceedings and other matters – are now in the hands of the District Attorney’s Office.
